A small but important update has come from Amazon this week, directly aimed at protecting sellers in the event of any Amazon claims.

What’s the latest update regarding Amazon claims?

Amazon has now updated the A-to-Z Guarantee program to support the claims process in the unlikely event that a defective product sold in their EU or UK stores causes property damage or personal injury. As long as you have valid commercial liability insurance, Amazon will pay any concessions directly to the buyer without asking sellers for reimbursement or insurance provider details.

  • For claims under €1,000 or £1,000 – if proven to have been caused by a defective product, Amazon will, at their discretion, pay a concession directly to the buyer. They will notify sellers when a claim has been processed, and sellers can then follow the claim status on Manage A-to-Z Claims in Seller Central.
  • For claims over €1,000 or £1,000 – Amazon or their third-party administrator, Sedgwick, will work with sellers to verify the claim and pay the concession to the buyer.

Have you got commercial liability insurance?

To sell on Amazon, you must obtain and maintain a valid commercial liability insurance policy once the gross proceeds from your transactions exceed the applicable insurance threshold in sales in any month. Amazon may reach out at any time to ask for your insurance details. For more information, check out the Amazon Services Europe Business Solutions Agreement.

If you have a valid commercial liability insurance policy that you bought in the US but you sell in the EU or UK stores, make sure you check with your insurance provider to verify that your policy covers claims made in the EU and the UK.

What if I’m a reseller and not a producer?

If you’re a reseller and not a producer, in the event of a claim, Amazon or Sedgwick will contact you via email to provide the producer’s insurance or contact information. You’ll be responsible for the claim compensation value if:

  • You’re unable to identify the producer of the product.
  • You don’t respond to Amazon’s request in seven business days.
  • You don’t have a valid insurance policy as required by the Business Solutions Agreement when they request it.
